This week I learned about OBEDIENCE! I learned that the blessings and miracles that come from even a small desire to be obedient are IMMEDIATE and TANGIBLE.
The past few weeks have been a little frustrating because Sister Bybee and I have been trying to build the area back up from floor one. Right before I was transferred here, the area had 5 baptisms, so coming in fresh we didn't have many investigators to work (because they'd all been baptized, which is GREAT!). We've been trying to figure out what it is God wants us to do with this area... It's taken a lot of patience, prayer, and hard work... The answer we came to was that we needed to be more obedient.
On Thursday, we had weekly planning with our elders. We had a really special companionship inventory with them. We started off by telling each other the things we appreciated about one another and it was such a special atmosphere. We were able to learn and grow from one another. Because we were working together with so much genuine love, the constructive criticism that followed was given and received so well. We set some solid goals together, many of which involved EXACT obedience. I love these missionaries so much!!! They are my people! My family!
And I just want to reiterate what I said before by sharing an experience that happened right after our talk... That night, the elders picked up two new investigators that we've been working to contact ALL MONTH and have had zero success. Then, the next day, we picked up another investigator and have since seen so many blessings come from just wanting to God's will.
Here is what a typical day is like in Boston (my dear companion wrote this, so you can thank her for that): "So let me tell you a few things that happened on Saturday. We met a man on the bus named Todd. He is 6'8" and was in a wheelchair because his leg was cut off below the knee. In a 10 minute bus ride he told us how he is a Free Mason and that had met with the missionaries for years and was about to get baptized a few years back but got into a bad relationship and lost contact with the missionaries. He was in jail for 3 years for something that he was proven "not guilty" of just last week and is working now to get back all of his property. (He has a house in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Arizona, was a merchant marine, went to chef school, lived in Germany and China, etc, etc) He said that he lost his leg and broke his nose in a beating in jail. He said he wanted to meet up with the missionaries here again. (And also that he wanted to marry a mormon woman) Say what???? So we got his number and are going to meet with him this week! (We will have to pass him off to the English Elders after that....He speaks Spanish, but he isn't hispanic.)
Next, we go to visit a less-active man and his family and while we are there, their friend came to visit. She is a nun from Puerto Rico and guess what her name is..... ENCARNACION. (Yes I immediately thought of Nacho Libre!) She was one of the most down-to-earth people I've ever met and she was so nice! We asked to share a message before we left so we shared a spiritual thought out of the Bible with a nun.....that doesn't happen every day.....
To top it off, on the way home I looked out the window of the bus and saw a guy riding a bike shirtless with a massive snake wrapped around his neck......yupp this is Boston! (Dorchester more specifically)"
This work is exhilarating! I was interviewed by President Miller this week and he told me a little about his vision for our mission... He wants every group here to become a branch, every branch become a ward, and he wants to split two stakes and create a new one in the next three years. He wants GROWTH here in the church and I know we have the mechanics, missionaries, and faith to make it happen! I am so happy to serve in the greatest mission on the planet. MBM PRIDE!
